Dancing Lady Orchid |
Ya, I know, these orchids are gorgeous. BUT, they all are DEAD!
It was few years back, way before I took gardening seriously as my hobby :(((
So, this time, before I step into nursery shop to buy an orchid plant, I better make sure I have the basic knowledge of taking care of them. Below are the summary of my google search on how to grow orchid.
Start with easy-to-grow orchids and eliminate finicky species. Easy grow orchids include Moth Orchid (Phalaenopsis selections) , Purple Dendrobium Orchid, Oncidium (dancing lady Orchid), and Cockleshell Orchid (Encyclia cochleata).

Give them enough light. Either sunlight or house light, most orchids don't require direct sunlight, meaning to say, you can place your orchid at windowsill which get enough sunlight. If you use florescent light, keep your orchid 8 inches or so beneath the light. Tips: If necessary, increase the amount of light by placing the plant in front of a mirror; a reflective surface will increase light.
Almost all orchids appreciate high humidity. Its good idea to place orchid in bathroom or near kitchen sink. To give mor humidity, put some pebbles in a pot filled with water, set the orchid (normally grow in a biodegraded pvc pot) on the pebbles.
No soil please! In the wild, orchids grow attached to other plants. They are not designed to grow in potting soil; please don't try to force them. Instead, plant them in a nice loose bark or mix of coco peats they can clutch happily.
Keep the roots dry. Orchids hate to have wet roots. Use good drainage pot. Keep the pot airy by putting some pebbles at the bottom of the pot.
Lastly, don't forget to provide them with proper nutrition. Try Cifo Granverde Liquid fertilizer which specially formulated for all types of orchids. Packed in small sachet for single usage, the Granverde Ochid is convenient and easy to use. Go to Granverde Orchid to find out more.
With all above, I hope I manage to grow some orchids soon. Fingers crossed.
